Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
West Bengal Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari has publicly appealed for action from India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, citing what he describes as targeted attacks on Hindu communities by Bangladeshi police and military forces in Chattogram. In a video shared on social media, Adhikari claimed that on the night of November 5, joint forces conducted raids in Hindu-populated areas such as Hazari Lane. “Innocent, unarmed Hindus were attacked by Bangladesh’s joint police and military forces,” Adhikari alleged.
Adhikari described incidents of alleged looting during the raids, claiming that shops, homes, and other Hindu-owned properties were ransacked. He asserted that “valuables like jewelry, cash, and other precious items” were taken from residents. He also claimed that CCTV cameras in the vicinity were reportedly dismantled or disabled, allegedly to prevent the recording of the incidents as evidence. These events, he said, are part of an increasing trend of hostility towards Hindus since the formation of Bangladesh’s interim government ahead of upcoming general elections.
The politician also detailed other forms of reported harassment faced by the Hindu community, mentioning cases of forced resignations of Hindu employees from government positions and alleged vandalism at Hindu temples. According to Adhikari, large-scale protests were organized by the Hindu community in Chattogram last month, drawing thousands to voice their opposition to these alleged acts of violence. He referenced this protest as a pivotal event that garnered international attention, claiming it may have intensified actions against Hindus.
Adhikari further accused Mohammad Yunus, the spokesperson of Bangladesh’s interim government, of playing a role in the alleged crackdown. “It is under Yunus’s orders that the joint forces took action to punish the Hindu community,” Adhikari stated. He claimed that over 200 Hindus were detained during the operations, with reports of injuries and possible fatalities. “Numerous Hindus were injured, and there are fears of several deaths as a result of joint force gunfire,” he said, though specific casualty figures were not provided.
In his concluding remarks, Adhikari appealed to Hindus globally for solidarity and urged Minister Jaishankar to take prompt diplomatic action. “The world’s Hindu community must unite against these atrocities and stand with Bangladeshi Hindus,” he said. As of now, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not released a statement in response to Adhikari’s appeal or to the reports of incidents in Chattogram.
